Some say modern graffiti was born in Philadelphia. What is certain is that a phenomenon started in Philly in the late 1960's that turned a group of wall writers into celebrities.

What emerged was a tradition of graffiti that continues today. And the fight against graffiti led to the City of Brotherly Love becoming the mural capital of the world. This is the story of what happened.

Sly Artistic Masters, better known on the streets of Philadelphia as SAM1, is the name of a graffiti club known for their own original style of writing called "wickeds"' or "wild styles". This group and style goes back to the late 70's. Their style was hard THEN, and STILL IS for others to decipher. The style used to create letters for names are complexed and had to be mastered by the individual using it for them to even be considered for membership. The style is very creative and beautiful to all of us that can appreciate originality and art of any form. Today we do not participate in writing graffiti on public or private property, only at events such as Philly's B Boy Barbeque or other events that may be held for the sole purpose of displaying one's talent.
